Observational Transient Astronomy and Optical Instrumentation

I'm interested in supernovae, the terminal explosions of massive stars, as they finish burning the nuclear fuel in their cores. During my PhD, I've been studying the very early time evolution (hours to days) of these distant bright transients, as we observe them from earth. These early time observations help us understand the immediate environments of the progenitor stars, and the last moments of their lives. In addition to observing young supernovae, I've been developing optical instrumentation for spectroscopic observatories of faint transients in future time-domain surveys.
